My family came to visit our farm this past weekend. They drove in from Michigan on Thursday night and stayed with us until Tuesday morning, and boy was it fun to have them here! Usually our place is so quiet, with just the frogs, cows, and dogs making most of the ambiance noise, but we got to liven it up with having family here! My sister, her husband Pat, and their 8-year old boy PJ enjoyed a taste of our rural, humid, summer life.
Almost immediately, PJ wanted to ride on the bike to go see the cows. I took him around to introduce him to them all and he instantly connected with Buttons the Bull. He also loved my cow Kinky, saying, "Lets go see Kinky and the flies on her back!" because she had flies on her back haha. They would whip their tails in the air and he would squeal in excitement.
My sister also loved riding around on the bike with me and seeing all the wild vegetation and roaming animals. I loved sharing the serene, peacefulness of the pasture with her. It had been raining alot so the humidity was in full force and the mosquitoes were not shy. My sister loves the heat, so she was happy as a clam.
Drew and Pat get along like two peas in a pod and often did their own thing, probably talking about Star Wars, history, and culture. Who knows, haha. When not riding around on the bike or cooling off in the AC at home, they played constant frisbee with Rue and she was in Heaven because of it. In true Jade form, she kept trying to show them she was the alpha over the entire farm, and she loved taking walks with them in the pasture in the morning. Luna was scared and barking at them quite a bit; she would warm up to them by evening, but in the morning would forget about it and be scared all over again.
Other highlights included: discovering a black kitten in the wheel well of the car and helping us rescue her (we now have another cat), helping feed the chickens and the cats and dogs, PJ learning to ride the tractor with his new BFF Rusty (Drew's pop), visiting McClain Farm for southern food and a petting zoo, swimming and jumping off rocks at Merit Water Park (our favorite swimming hole), celebrating my birthday with Drew's family too (eating delicious red beans and rice), grilling up dinner with the family, PJ and I baking together, seeing a newborn calf (Rusty named her PJ), and singing way too much Wheels on the Bus, Old MacDonald Had a Farm, and Peace and Harmony in All The World. PJ cried at night saying he never wanted to leave, which melted my happy little heart. On Tuesday morning, we went for a final bike spin, they packed up the car, and we waved and cried as they drove down the driveway to go home. It was so much fun to have them here for a summer family vacation, I miss them already.
